Wi-Fi Security Action Items
Most home routers are configured for convenience out of the box. Adjusting a few key settings can significantly improve your home security posture:
- Review Router Administrator Credentials: Change shared manufacturer defaults because they may be widely known. A unique password printed on an individual router is not necessarily public; keep it private and change it if it has been exposed, reused, or the manufacturer recommends doing so.
- Use WPA3 or WPA2 Encryption: Ensure your network security protocol is set to WPA3 (preferred) or WPA2-AES. Avoid legacy systems like WEP or WPA, which are vulnerable to simple password attacks.
- Configure a Guest Network: Enable a separate guest Wi-Fi network for smart TVs, smart plugs, cameras, and visitors. This isolates IoT devices and guest systems from your personal computers and network storage.
- Review WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup): Some WPS methods and older implementations have security weaknesses. Disable WPS if you do not need it, particularly PIN-based WPS.
- Keep Firmware Updated: Router manufacturers patch security flaws regularly. Enable automated firmware updates if your router supports them.
